Calling school off is never an easy decision. Please be patient and understand that these decisions are difficult to make, taken very seriously and involve many levels of people to help determine if conditions are safe for school to be open. The Superintendent of Schools works with the Griffith Police Department and the Director of Public Works for the Town of Griffith, to make this determination.

It is important to know the process for calling off school. Griffith Public Schools and Town of Griffith personnel begin as early as 2:00 a.m. when bad weather is expected.

Roads are continually assessed for safety. Buses begin their routes at 6:00 a.m. If by 6:00 a.m. the roads are favorable and sidewalks conditions are expected to be good to get students safely to school, then school remains open.

We try to make informed decisions as quickly as possible, but as you know, weather is unpredictable. Be aware that 6:00 a.m. is decision-making time unless the conditions drastically change. We appreciate your understanding the magnitude of the decision-making process and hope that you understand that it is taken very seriously.

In order to provide time for roads, sidewalks and weather conditions to improve and become safer for travel, Griffith Public Schools may use a 2-hour delayed start of school.

A delayed start to school allows the school district to accomplish the following:

    1. Provide more time for safe conditions to start school.

    2. Project whether a closure of school is needed.

    3. Allow school to be held with improved conditions and not have to make up a weather day

      because of school closure.

If a two-hour delay is called breakfast and lunch will be served. The following schedule is used for 2-hour delayed start:

    • All bus routes run two hours later than the normal time.

    • Elementary School classes start at 10:15 a.m. instead of 8:15 a.m. Students may arrive

      earlier for breakfast.

    • Griffith High School and Griffith Middle School students report to first hour class at

9:30 a.m. instead of 7:30 a.m. Students may arrive earlier for breakfast.

    • Griffith High School GAP students do not report to school on delayed start days.

Griffith High School Career Center students do not attend the Career Center. They may either report to school at 9:30 a.m. for a supervised study period, or report to school at 11:15 a.m. in time for their 4th period class. Cosmetology students may either report to school at 9:30 a.m. for supervised study, or report to school at 12:00 for “C” lunch or 5th period, depending on their schedule.
